Obayashi’s presence in the US as a heavy/civil engineering contractor began in 1979 when, after being invited by the City of San Francisco to bid on a soft ground tunnel under Fisherman’s Wharf, it became the first Japanese contractor to be awarded a US public works contract. This was also the first tunnel in the United States to be mined using the specialized Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) tunnel boring machine, a technological advance in machine tunneling developed in part by Obayashi’s Technical Research Institute.

Success on this project led us to open a US Branch office in the Bay Area which is now Obayashi's North American Civil Group. Other notable work on well-known structures in the US include the Colorado River Bridge downstream of Hoover Dam, the Golden Gate Bridge Seismic Retrofit, Transbay Transit Center in San Francisco, twin light rail transit tunnels and stations in Seattle, Minneapolis, Pittsburgh and Los Angeles, Weston Tunnel Grade Separation in Toronto, Canada, and the St. Bernard Levee which was designed to protect New Orleans from hurricane flood waters.
