Wiarton Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrades
The Wiarton WWTP upgrades doubles capacity of the existing plant and aims to meet new regulation standards. Work included construction of a new pre-treatment building, a 3-cell concrete Moving Bed Bio Film Reactor (MBBR) tank, septage receiving station, electrical, mechanical, instrumentation and controls. The MBBR treatment system uses polyethylene bio film carriers to provide a large internal surface area for the growth of microorganisms. This process manages Biological Oxygen Demand removal in the first two cells and nitrification in the third cell. The screening process, constructed ahead of the reactor cells, includes a mechanical screen, washer, and compactor.
